This rare book written by G.E. Wilford was pubished in 1964 and is a treasure trove of information for cavers about the Sarawak and Sabah region.
In this Bulletin the main caves and cave regions of Sarawak and Sabah are briefly described, and an attempt is made to outline the probable history of cave formation. Limestone caves are the commonest and they occur in all the larger limestone hills. The limestones are of Permian, Jurassic and Cretaceous age in West Sarawak and mainly of Tertiary age in East Sarawak and Sabah. The 20 largest outcrops which contain caves cover about 200 square miles. Tropical erosion of the limestone has resulted in isolated cliff-bounded rugged hills and mountains, in places partly surrounded by swampy areas underlain by limestone from which project small limestone pinnacles. Most of the limestone, irrespective of its age, is typically a pure, fine-grained rock with poorly defined bedding and fairly widely spaced joints.

Birds' nest is one of the exotic food items which has originated from south-east Asia. The island of Borneo with its many limestone caves has provided an ideal home for the edible birds' nest swiftlets to nest and breed.
Sarawak has attained a renowned position as an important centre for the supply of processed birds' nests to Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The history of birds' nests as a trade item with South China dated back to the early sixteenth century.
The Sarawak Museum has since the 1940s carried out many research projects on the conservation of management of the bird's nest industry in Sarawak. However there is a lack of local information on the birds' nests availble to the layman.
This book seeks to enlighten the general public on the many birds' nest caves and varieties of birds' nests available in Sarawak with comparative materials from other countries. It will also provide some useful information to the layman on how to identify the quality of birds' nests and the methods of preparing the nests for consumption. Many Birds' nest traders and processors have assisted in the preparation of this book.

This book discusses the wood coffin burial tradition of Kinabatangan Valley, Sabah. Archaeological evidence from past and recent studies has shown that the Kinabatangan Valley was the centre of the wood coffin burial tradition in Sabah. Until now, many limstone caves and rockshelters containing hundreds of wood coffins have been found along the Kinabatangan River. Archaeological research and radiocarbon dating of the wood coffins suggested that the tradition of wood coffin burial in Kinabatangan Valley commenced as early as 1,000 years ago and is still being practised by the communities of Sungai and Murut living in the Kinabatangan Valley. |
